National Voter Registration Day

6/2/2015

Yesterday was National Voter Registration Day, an initiative we supported along with many other organisations. Hopefully tens of thousands of people registered to vote; perhaps even 100,000 signed up.

That's great, but it's only a start.

On Tuesday I wrote to you explaining that 7.5 million people were not registered to vote, including one million who had recently dropped off the electoral register because of changes introduced by the Government.

And of course those most likely to be unregistered are the young, those in private rented accommodation and members of minority communities.

This is unacceptable and if you agree then help us

Over the next few weeks HOPE not hate will be running a huge voter registration campaign with the aim of signing up another 50,000 voters. We will be going into many of the areas most affected by voter drop off.

As part of this effort, we'll be organising mass door-to-door registration drives, training and briefing community groups - so that they can run their own local initiatives - and joining together with The Daily Mirror to run a voter registration bus tour.

Please chip in to help us register at least 50,000 voters

We know from our time fighting the BNP what happens when people feel excluded from the system. Some simply drop out of any engagement but others become susceptible to the simple and scapegoating solutions of extremists.

Voting is the lifeblood of any democracy and it is a national scandal that one in seven people are not registered to vote. If you agree with me then please help us do something about it.

Next week we will tell you how you can get involved in our voter registration campaign locally. But for now I’m asking for your help in giving us the means to give a voice to those who most need it.

Thanks

Nick
